Epson expands labelling portfolio
Epson has announced four new ColorWorks desktop labelling printers and updated the productivity on its SurePress UV label press.

Thus Epson now has a new version of its SurePress L-6534VW label press, which appears to be basically the same machine as before but with new firmware. Essentially this has allowed Epson to double the standard speed from 15 to 30mpm and to add a 50mpm Productivity mode. Frank Maeda, head of product marketing for Epson UK’s business systems, says that previously the press maintained a consistent speed for all colours including white and varnish, adding: “But some people only want to print CMYK so we can increase the speed.” My impression was that Epson is still evaluating whether it will be able to upgrade the existing L6000-series presses but Maeda cautions that some of the hardware components have also changed.

Otherwise, this press continues to use Epson’s PrecisionCore printheads, with 600 x 1200 dpi resolution, across a 330mm print width. It uses the same UV inks and will print to paper and film-based label stocks from 80 to 320 microns. It should be available now.

The new desktop models are the ColorWorks CW-C6000, which takes media from 25.4mm to 112mm, and the larger 6500, which takes media from 25.4mm to 215.9mm. Both of these are available in two versions, with an auto-cutter as Ae models, and with an auto-peeler to remove the backing paper as Pe models. These are mainly aimed at manufacturers and can be integrated seamlessly into existing print-and-apply production line systems. They are said to be suitable for producing small to medium batches of labels on-demand, for applications such as printing tiny labels for vaping liquid bottles up to large durable labels suitable for chemical drums. They can also be managed remotely from a web interface.

Jacob Kallergis, manager of product management for Epson Europe, commented: “We’re sure that users will benefit hugely from the speed, control, efficiency and flexibility that’s offered, along with a wealth of new supporting features. We’re particularly pleased that the CW-C6000Pe and CW-C6500Pe models (with peelers) can be combined with production line systems to print and peel one-by-one labels with variable data. We believe it’s the world’s first peeler-equipped inkjet label printer to print and peel labels one-by-one.”

There are also two new label solutions for manufacturing and construction as well as for use in warehouses, and high-end electrical maintenance. The LabelWorks LW-Z5010BE has an integrated keyboard, display, and Li-ion battery, while the LW-Z5000BE is for PC and smart device use. They can be used for patch panelling, cable identification, face plates, distribution boxes, safety signs, and product identification. They offer a quick start-up plus new software and applications for editing. They can print at up to 50mm/sec and take LK Tape Cartridges from 4mm to 50mm widths as well as big media rolls from 9mm to 50mm widths. There’s also an automatic rewinder available.
