CFH Docmail invests in Canon inkjet
CFH Docmail Ltd, a UK based transactional and mailing printer, has signed a five-year contract with Canon for an Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma continuous inkjet web press. This contract, which is worth £3 million, resulted from a competitive two-year Request for Proposal, or RFP.

This is the first inkjet press that CFH has installed. It invested in the new press to add extra capacity alongside its existing colour toner devices, which also include a Xerox iGen and Ricoh 9110. Adam Harwood, Managing Director of CFH Radstock, explained: “Modern inkjet printing systems offer high-quality colour printing at the same or faster speeds than the black only toner systems, and at a lower price point than mono or colour toner systems. With colour lasers typically only able to produce 80-150 A4 images per minute, having a system that can produce 1700 colour images per minute at lower running costs is almost a mandatory capability for a commercial print and mail house.”

As well as the ColorStream, CFH also looked at inkjet presses from Xerox and Pitney Bowes. Harwood says that there was very little to choose between the three devices in terms of print quality and productivity, adding: “The reason for going with Canon was their ability to provide support for us through the installation and then ongoing support. We are very well serviced from Canon in this regard and all of their support engineers are trained on the colour devices.”

We were impressed with the versatility, efficiency and sustainability of the Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma and, having enjoyed a long partnership with Canon Océ, which supplies our VarioStream continuous toner and VarioPrint cut sheet printers, we are confident we have made a strong decision.”

The ColorStream 6000 Chroma uses new high definition Chromera inks that produce high quality images across a broad range of different media. The press allows users to switch quickly between mono and colour inkjet jobs using the same white paper stock. It supports MICR inks and has all the necessary accreditation for secure printing including cheque infill and cheque personalisation.

CFH has developed its own hybrid mail management solution, Docmail, which was launched back in 2008. This allows post to be printed and delivered direct from a desktop computer. Users upload their documents via a website to the company’s servers. CFH then prints and sorts them, the aim being to produce and deliver documents in the most cost-effective way, exploiting economies of scale and mail sorting discounts. The service is continuing to grow, with Harwood saying that there is “a good pipeline of new opportunities and lots of new strategic alliances” including things such as providing a framework for government purchasing.
