From left: Neil Strickland, marketing manager and Holly Steedman, business development manager, with Integration Technology Steedman says that “curing is often left as an afterthought but we want people to be thinking about it right from the beginning, not just the ink and the printheads but the whole system. Our target is to be better positioned with ink suppliers.” Strickland adds: “Ultimately the whole industry needs to communicate with one another.”

Rita Torfs, product manager for industrial inks at Agfa, says that Agfa has developed a water-based ink suitable for both folding carton and corrugated media, both coated and uncoated. The ink does not use any form of binder but does require a separate primer. She says that most corrugates will apply this primer via a flexo roller, which is a process that most converters are comfortable working with. However, Agfa is also developing a digital primer and can currently offer an inkjet primer for coated media.

Marc Granero, inkjet sales manager for Kao Chimigraf, says that the company has developed a silver ink that will work with just about any piezo-electric printhead as well as HP thermal cartridges, and that its not necessary for these printheads to have any form of recirculation. He explains: “We are able to encapsulate the pigment and make it very dispersible so that it doesn’t agglomerate and doesn’t clog the nozzles.” The ink is developed and manufactured in Japan.

Inkatronic has developed ink management systems for both single pass and scanning inkjet printers. These are mostly aimed at prototyping and lab work.

The InPrint show was in the same hall as the CCE cardboard corrugates event though there was very little evidence of inkjet use in that part of the show. But there were a few worth mentioning. Macarbox, for example, is developing a digital printer for printing to uncoated corrugated board. Print resolution is 360 x 360 dpi with a choice of one or two sets of CMYK printheads. Sales manager Amal Soualili says that it has slightly better quality than flexo printing and should be available within a few months.

The Italian company has developed this Bombardier industrial printer. Sales director Stefano Paiano says that it has a modular design so that users can start with a small two-colour version or configure it with a wider print width and more colours by adding more modules. The company works with printheads from several vendors and will customise each model according to the substrate being printed to. It can print to a wide range, from paper to metal.

Overall, the show did feel quite busy and all the vendors seemed pleased with the level of business they were doing there. It was smaller than normal – I would estimate that the show was about 40 piercent of the size normally but Germany was still in lockdown when most people were planning it so I think that’s actually quite good under the circumstances. And most people I spoke to were optimistic that life will still to get back to normality over the next few months – I do hope so as I have quite a few other European events that I’m planning to cover!

I’m on my way home now but I’ll write a more detailed report over the next few days. All the best, Nessan
