Matthews takes first UK Nexfinity
Matthews the Printers, based in Chingford in London, has become the first UK printer to install a Kodak Nexfinity digital press. The company mainly works on cross media marketing campaigns, mostly in the food, drink and leisure sectors.
Kodak’s Nexfinity sheetfed press builds on its Nexpress platform.

The machine has been installed and running since October with Matthews taking the time to bed the press in before talking about it. Riddell says that the company had been working with digital for over five years, adding: “We felt that we wanted to up the ante in terms of the quality that we can offer.” Matthews tested a number of digital presses but found that the Nexfinity won out in terms of its print quality, which Riddell described as “excellent”, adding: “It’s really great and we are really pleased with it. We can get much better definition in the highlight areas and the contrast.”

This in turn means that Matthews now has the confidence to put high value short run jobs on the Nexfinity where previously the company might have run prestige jobs on offset just to guarantee the print quality. Riddell adds: “It’s better than the offset.”

Riddell says the company has made use of the Nexfinity’s fifth colour station, printing white, but also using it to mix other colours: “We’ve had pretty good results, especially for things like a limey green, where you would normally have to run a special colour.”

The Nexfinity was first previewed at Drupa 2016 and officially launched in March 2018. It’s the latest generation of the Nexpress dry toner printer, with a new high resolution and multi-bit LED writing system giving 1200 x 1200 dpi and 256 levels of exposure on the imaging cylinder. It should be capable of producing up to 152 A4 ppm and handle standard sheets up to 356 x 520mm.

Riddell added: “The Nexfinity press is an incredibly versatile machine that delivers a powerful combination of image quality, consistency, and low running costs. As a complement to our existing litho and digital capability, the Nexfinity press also gives us the flexibility and confidence to move shorter run jobs to digital without sacrificing quality seamlessly. We’re also looking forward to running new applications through the digital press with the Nexfinity press capable of handling thicker substrates and with the ability to add on options like special effects.” This includes packaging with Matthews having already printed some internal packaging on the Nexfinity.

A further bonus is that Matthews is already using a Prinergy workflow, which integrates with the Nexfinity front end.
