HP has announced two new PageWide high-volume inkjet web presses, designed for pre-print corrugated packaging, that is, printing to the face sheet that will then be added to the corrugated media.
This HP T1190 PageWide press has six colours – CMYKOV – and is designed specifically for pre-print corrugated printing.
These two printers, the T1190 and T1170, will ultimately replace the existing T1100s. Both new presses offer a wider colour gamut, benefiting from the addition of orange and violet inks alongside the standard CMYK. The main difference between the two is the speed, with the T1170 running at 183mpm while the T1190 can produce 305mpm.

At 2.8m the T1100 platform wider than other PageWide presses and so HP has worked with Koenig and Bauer to help develop the media transport system. They can print to both coated and uncoated media, from 80 gsm to 350 gsm. They use HP’s thermal printheads and its A30 water-based inks, which are suitable for food packaging applications when printed to the outside of the box.

Both printers use HP’s Multi-lane Print Architecture, which splits the web into multiple print lanes so that different jobs with different box sizes and run lengths can be printed in the individual lanes.

The first PageWide T1190 Press will be a field upgrade to the T1100S that DS Smith is installing in its Fulda plant in Germany. Stefano Rossi, CEO, DS Smith Packaging, explained: “The T1190’s industry-leading 6-colour, high-speed 2.8 wide digital pre-print system will enable new efficiencies for our customers.“ He added: “Plus, with our new six-colour capability, we will expand our gamut and create even greater digital value for brands.”
