Len Lauer, CEO of Memjet, has died suddenly at his home in La Jolla, California at the age of 62. Lauer was named the CEO of Memjet in 2010 and assumed the role of Chairman in 2012.

Lauer was instrumental in setting Memjet up as the company that it is today. The technology was originally developed in Australia by Silverbrook Research, headed by Kia Silverbrook, who begun working on it in the mid-90s. But the technology took longer to fully develop and gain traction in the market place, and Silverbrook fell out with his investors at the Kaiser Foundation leading to a series of legal actions. Lauer helped resolve these issues, setting the company up as a separate, privately-owned business based in California, USA.

Lauer oversaw the development of the Memjet brand, expanding from mainly desktop office printing into the labels and packaging sector. He settled licensing issues with Canon and HP and drove the technology into pigment-based inks to expand the range of applications, and addressed the lifespan issues that are typical of all thermal printheads. The result is that Memjet is increasingly moving from a niche printhead vendor to a major player in helping vendors develop low cost hybrid print solutions.

Most importantly, Len was a devoted husband, father, and friend. We all will miss his tremendous presence in our lives.”

Lauer will be succeeded, as CEO of Memjet by Sunil Gupta, who joined the company’s Board of Directors in January of 2019. He has a background in printing, having previously worked at Fuji Xerox Australia, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific and Xerox International Partners, and Xerox Corporation.
