Screen partners Rotocontrol for hybrid labelling
Screen has teamed up with Rotocontrol to create a hybrid labelling solution complete with Screen’s L350UV+ inkjet press and Rotocontrol’s DT340 flexo finishing.
ScreenÕ has integrated its L350UV+ inkjet press with RotocontrolÕs DT340 flexo finishing unit.

This system provides an open and accessible web path with independent electrical control cabinets and servo controls from Bosch Rexroth. It can handle a wide range of substrates with a maximum print speed of 60mpm, which is the top speed of the Screen press. Naturally, since the print unit is digital, it can cope with variable data. It can also take advantage of Screen’s recently announced blue ink, and could use the low migration version of the L350UV+ press.

Marco Aengenvoort, managing director of Rotocontrol, explained: “Customization capability is the key strength of this end-to-end hybrid label printing and finishing system.” This flexibility would allow for various configurations, for example, an unwind unit, corona treater, web cleaner, first flexo station + UV drier, the UV inkjet label press, second flexo station with UV drier, UV lamination or cold foil, full rotary/semi rotary combination die station with matrix stripping, and rewind station.

However, neither Screen nor Rotocontrol replied when I asked about the degree of integration between the inkjet press and the flexo converting units. It’s also worth noting that there are already a couple of options around Screen’s label press. For a start, Screen has sold a Jet Converter finishing unit in the past, which was built by AB Graphics. There’s no mention of this at time of writing on the Screen Europe website and there was a deafening silence from Screen when I asked about this which doesn’t suggest that Screen has much interest in this now.

But Screen does have an ongoing relationship with Nilpeter, which sells a version of the L350UV as its own DP-3 Panorama label press. Nilpeter also sells this as a hybrid solution complete with flexo and converting units. It’s a fully integrated solution that runs Screen’s Equios workflow.

I suspect that the integration between digital presses and converting lines will be a major theme at this year’s Label Expo show in Brussels in September, so watch this space for more details on this area.
