Onyx 18 gains a number of new features, mostly around handling colour.

This version is compatible with iccMAX, the new standard recommended by the ICC for all wide- and grand-format print applications including textile and soft signage. Amongst the new features are core enhancements to the colour engine for improved black ink combinations that give increased shadow detail, texture and definition, as well as increased saturation of reds and oranges without compromising ink savings. This also applies to textile printing, including soft signage.

There’s a new ColorCheck process control tool set that enables print service providers to guarantee colour accuracy to their customers as well as ensure consistency of output across devices over time. ColorCheck also ensures conformance to standards including G7 and Fogra as well as baseline testing for process control and in-product indicators for printer recalibration.

There are improvements to PosterColor 2.0, which uses next-generation smart rendering intent to boost saturation of solid colours for added ‘pop’ across all image types.There is a new iterative ICC profiling technique called AccuBoost that promises to deliver pinpoint accuracy of ICC profiles.

It’s based on the latest Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE 4.8), which should give faster processing for patterns and soft masks with improved algorithms for rendering complex file types. APPE 4.8 also brings allows spot colour handling for up to 127 channels that can be specified and used in any given region.

There are some new tools for print productivity including quick search functionality for Swatch Books and support in Swatch Books for specialty ink to print on any material. There are also tools for easy crop positioning during job preparation and larger nesting previews and nest rotation to match printer set-up.

It’s already been certified by HP for use with its new R2000, the first HP latex printer to use white ink. Onyx added a Quick Sets feature to the driver, which uses a Spot Layer tool to generate white under- or over-layers.
