Monotech Systems, which is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu India, has developed a new hybrid label press, the Jetsci ColorAqua, using Memjet’s DuraFlex technology.

This is a standalone solution that includes a flexo unit for adding primers inline as standard but with the same converting options as Monotech’s high end ColorNovo UV inkjet range, which includes flexo units for spot colours and varnish as well as semi and full rotary die cutting. Although it’s initially offered as an offline unit, the idea is that customers will later be able to integrate it directly with their existing lines, including with flexo presses, finishing or converting solutions.

Monotech has had some success with its higher end models but Jimit Mittal, Monotech’s vice president of inkjet solutions, says that this new machine is to satisfy the demand for an entry level model, noting: “People who find it difficult to start digital printing can adopt this entry level model and then gradually move to the higher end easily. Though this is an entry level machine, the features are able to compete with any higher end machines.”

He says that the company chose Memjet for its combination of fast speed and high quality print, as well as its reliability, flexibility and the ability to quickly integrate it, adding: “With this we have all the digital label solutions to offer to the market, entry level, mid-range and high end, so now we can cater to all demands.”

Memjet’s DuraFlex printheads have four channels each and have been designed so that a single printhead can run CMYK, which allows for a compact print unit and keeps the cost down. The maximum resolution of these heads is 1600 x 1600 dpi and this press is able to run at up to 45mpm. Monotech says that it’s suitable for microtext, variable data and security printing. It has a maximum print width of 326mm.

Naturally, it uses Memjet’s aqueous pigment inks, which are said to be lightfast, water durable and scratch resistant. It’s said to be able to print on most general coated and uncoated label stock materials without primers and can also print on many films and substrates by applying primers, and does come complete with a flexo unit for this purpose.

Mittal says: “We are starting with the application on standard paper labels like for pharma, wine labels and so on and then will gradually open up the other applications in flexible packaging and corrugated. We have seen customers printing 2000 linear metres easily on digital but we have some examples where customers find this suitable for even much longer run lengths due to the number of operations they can reduce from conventional and make the turnaround time quicker.”

Mittal continues: “In today’s scenario, digital label printing is becoming the standard in every label printer’s workflow due to the shrinking run lengths and increasing demand of varied SKU’s from brands, and it is being adapted very fast now which can be seen through the number of installations globally in the last two years, though it depends what technology solution they have acquired.”
