MPS partners with Colordyne
MPS Systems and Colordyne have set up a strategic partnership to develop hybrid inkjet and flexo presses for packaging converters, with the first fruit of this arrangement to be shown at next week’s Label Expo show.
MPS has teamed up with Colordyne to add the Memjet-based 3600 AP unit to its mid-web EXL Packaging press.

MPS has integrated Colordyne’s 3600 AP inkjet engine to its EXL-Packaging flexo press. The EXL is a mid-web press that’s been designed to be as flexible as possible. It can be used with UV, water based and solvent based inks, which in turn allows for a wide variety of substrates, from 12 to 450 micron, including thin film, paper, cartonboard, shrink sleeves, inmould, lamitube and flexible packaging. It’s available in 530, 580 and 680mm and can run at up to 300mpm. It has a modular design so that customers can mix and match printing and converting units, such as screen, gravure, laminating and foiling (both hot and cold). It’s worth noting that MPS also offers an offset version of this press, the EXL-Offset.

Atze Bosma, CEO of MPS Systems, points out that the company has already developed a hybrid UV inkjet flexo solution for the narrow web label market with its Symjet press so this is a natural extension. He added: “As we are very much focused on the total process, we believe in the combination of aqueous inkjet technology and flexo for the flexible packaging market. Working with Colordyne on the new aqueous pigment inkjet technology provides an additional way for us to deliver the best solutions to our customers.”

The 3600 AP uses Memjet’s single channel DuraLink printheads with aqueous pigment inks, which in this case are coming from Kao Collins. It can run at up to 204mpm in draft mode though this speed drops to 75mpm at its maximum resolution of 1600 x 1585 dpi, which is still at the top end in terms of productivity for inkjet label printing.

It’s available both as an off the shelf 216mm-wide version for converters to retrofit to existing presses, and as a more flexible engine kit version for OEMs to work with. This latter version comes in several sizes with MPS using the three-head per colour 647.7mm version. Colordyne will work with MPS to offer service support to this unit.
