Colordyne introduces new AP inkjet module
Colordyne has announced a new addition to its 3600 series inkjet modules for narrow web label presses. The 3600 AP appears to be the commercial release of a product that I reported here last year.

Colordyne is now offering this 3600 AP inkjet module using Memjet’s DuraLink printheads and aqueous pigment ink.

These are full colour CMYK modules that can be used to convert a flexo press into a hybrid solution, either for adding variable data to a flexo print job, or even just for short runs. The advantage is that they’re cheaper than buying a new press, and converters can continue to use their existing tooling.

Clearly, Colordyne has opted to keep its existing 3600 AQ modules, and to rename this second generation as the 3600 AP Series. This comes in two flavours, as a Retrofit option that can be added to existing flexo presses by label converters, and as an Engine Kit that press manufacturers can use to integrate an inkjet module directly into their flexo machines. It also allows OEMs to stitch multiple heads together for wider print widths. John Urban, Colordyne’s product manager for this series, explained: “Colordyne offers our integration partners quicker and lower cost engine development to get their solutions to market faster. Adopting digital technology in label, commercial, corrugate and industrial markets, among others, has never been easier than with a Colordyne print engine.”

The significance behind this new AP series is that I believe that it is one of the first implementations of Memjet’s DuraLink printhead, which was announced last year. DuraLink is a major step forward as it works with aqueous pigment ink, which is suitable for a wider range of substrates, and gives greater durability including water fastness, light fastness and rub resistance. This head also offers improved image quality with resolution up to 1600 x 1585 dpi. It’s still a thermal head, and so the heads are still a consumable item, but with longer lifespan than the older Memjet VersaPass heads.

Taylor Buckthorpe, director of sales at Colordyne Technologies, commented: “The 3600 Series AP solutions can print high-quality images on coated and uncoated substrates, as well as prime substrates in-line. This versatility makes the pigment technology cost-effective and expands the applications and markets it can be used in.”

In total, Colordyne now sells three 3600 series inkjet modules. This includes the original AQ, using Memjet’s older VersaPass printhead with dye-based aqueous inks, as well as this new AP with the new DuraLink head and pigment inks. There’s also a UV option, which uses Kyocera printheads.
